CNN gone wild - another tragedy in NYC
I found this screen shot on Wonkette tonight, and I laughed hysterically. No, not at the news of another Manhattan tragedy, but the manner in which the network reported it. More on that in a minute. (By the way, Wonkette is one of the best political blogs around, especially if you're a Democrat. )Anyway, a plane piloted by New York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle crashed into a high-rise building in Manhattan earlier today, and it was horrible to see. It's another sad incident of a celebrity dying in an airplane that perhaps could have been prevented.
Lidle joins a lengthy list of celebrities who have had their lives cut tragically short in a private plane - the Yanks' own Thurmon Munson, JFK Jr., Paul Wellstone, John Denver and Payne Stewart to name a few. I read something earlier tonight that Lidle didn't have a whole lot of experience behind the stick and that he wasn't qualified to fly on instruments only.
I don't understand why people get delusions of grandeur when they become famous and take flying lessons. It's often a recipe for disaster. I feel very sorry for Lidle and his family. If I ever do become famous, I'll leave the flying to the professionals, but for the record, I'll do as little flying as possible, since I hate it so very much.
I cracked up at CNN's "6-pack" screen pictured at top. These morons can make themselves look stupid during any tragedy. Hopefully, the 6-pack won't last, like those insanely idiotic "news" scrolls that we're stuck with since 9-11. All that's missing is a title; the networks adore giving everything good and bad a title (mostly bad) - like "Attack on America" during 9-11, or "Terror in the Heartland" following Oklahoma City. Whatever.
I certainly don't want to politicize something like this, but I was a bit disturbed that there didn't seem to be any awareness of the plane before it hit the high rise, in Manhattan, no less. Perhaps there was, and we'll read about it tomorrow. It doesn't give me much confidence in our military's preventive capabilities in our largest city, though.

Concerning Lidle's qualifications, the New York Times reports that Lidle said as he was cleaning his locker out in Detroit that he was planning to work on instrument training coming up here. As he was flying with his instructor, this is probably what he was doing. Or it's possible that the instructor had the stick at the moment; the plane had dual controls. We'll have to refrain from too many guesses until the FAA investigates.
