Richardson's views on Obama endorsement

Yesterday, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson endorsed Barack Obama for president, citing Obama's speech earlier this week during which he went over and above explaining his relationship with Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Well I waited because I was just legitimately very torn. You mentioned my ties to the Clintons, my loyalties to President Clinton, my support and respect for Senator Clinton.

But, I just realized that if I was going to make a difference, at a time we need party unity, at a time when the campaign was really getting nasty and personal, at a time when Senator Obama responded, I believe, in such a courageous way to a problem in his campaign — those remarks by his own pastor — I felt that I needed to step in and say that I am backing Senator Obama because I think this man has got something very good about him, something very special.

If I had to pick a favorite running mate for either Obama or Clinton, right now, Richardson. He has an impeccable résumé and he brings a great deal to the ticket. However, I won't be a bit surprised if Richardson takes a senior cabinet position in an Obama or Clinton administration, and perhaps that is why he would refuse the VP slot if it's offered.

I love these two new ads from Bill Richardson's campaign. I still rate him a long shot to win the nomination, but there's lots of time yet. There's no doubt in my mind that no other candidate's résumé can match Richardson's, on either side of the aisle.

I'm not endorsing any Democratic candidate yet, (it's much too early for that) but Richardson is an impressive candidate. If he does not win the nomination, he will no doubt be given very strong consideration for vice president, or perhaps a very high-level cabinet position in the likely event of a Democratic triumph next year. I think he would make a terrific secretary of state.

A good Bill Richardson campaign vid

I'll admit, it's early in the game for me to be paying much attention to campaign vids, but when I run across an interesting or creative one, I'll bring it to you. I found this one while surfing one of my favorite sites tonight, Crooks and Liars.

Thus far, Bill Richardson has not received too much attention in the media (at least on the east coast, where I live). But, I don't think that makes him any less formidable of a candidate.

Sadly, in the end, money might force him from the campaign, and that would really be a shame.

At any rate, if Richardson does not get the nomination, he will certainly get very strong consideration (and with good reason) for being the number two on the ticket.

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has announced that he will seek the presidency in 2008.

Wow, it's been quite a week - Obama, Hillary and Richardson. Not bad for Democrats, and not a bad reflection of the party and its inclusion of minorities and strong feminist values.

Richardson, a Democrat, is an interesting man who has worn many hats, including Secretary of Energy, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and a two-term governor of New Mexico.

I like his ideas on energy dependence and on border security and immigration. He's uniquely qualified on both fronts - he was raised in Mexico City and he knows a great deal about America's energy challenges since he was Clinton's Energy Secretary for two years.

It's also a plus that he was Ambassador the the United Nations.

Other than that, I look forward to learning more about him, but it's a positive that he's in the field of candidates. If he comes out on top of the crowded field of Democrats, he would be the first Hispanic nominee for president from any party in our nation's history.
