Latest TMW touches all the bases

More sage, spot-on political witticisms from Tom Tomorrow - I look forward to his cartoons every Tuesday morning. I love it that he even makes light of the two most annoying non-verbal actions by any candidates in recent memory - Palin's winking and McCain's blinking.

And, my friends, let's not forget, my friends, that he even mentions, my friends, McCain's most annoying habit of all... my friends. Whoever told him it was a good idea to start saying that should be fired given a raise.

TMW: Those crazy liberals

Another sage This Modern World by Tom Tomorrow - this one takes on us crazy liberals, as viewed by the right.

Tom Tomorrow's 'toons for the times

As many of you know, I love Tom Tomorrow's This Modern World (I'll bring you a preview of this week's cartoon in a minute). This morning, I found this cartoon on his blog that dates back to 1999. As he sagely mentions, the players are different, but the idea is still the same. Oh, and Greenspan's disastrous economic policies largely remain in place, which are resulting in the wholesale destruction of our economy.

On that cheerful note, enjoy the video. :o/

TMW: The Politics of Resentment

[Click for a larger image]

This week's This Modern World is a spot-on assessment of where Republicans stand regarding the building resentment (and dare I say it, fear) about our rapidly crumbling economy. Things are indeed growing dire by the day with our economic system, and seeing John McCain, Sarah Palin and [GASP!] President Bush on TV saying "We are taking measures to stabilize the economy" inspires NO confidence whatsoever. In fact, it makes me more fearful than ever that the worst rube to ever occupy the White House has his hands on the controls for a little over four more months. Bush's management of the economy is akin to a crazy psychotic with a baseball bat loose in a China shop, who with a crazed look on his face, screams, "What can I possibly fuck up next?!?" while wildly swinging away. The ONLY fun part about all of this is anticipating how just about everyone with an "R" behind his or her name will try to pin this on the Democrats; it will make for some fun yet tragic listening.

Speaking of This Modern World, Tom Tomorrow's blog is always a must-read, and yesterday he offered this nugget:
Certainly would be a good time to have some of the $500 billion plus we've spent on the Iraq war.
Ya think? Great point - it makes the War in Iraq appear even more asinine, tragic and unnecessary than it already does to everyone but the most rabid Republicans.

I'll add this to TT's thought - Obama ought to put out a new ad with images of our smirking, war-criminal president in the background, with the a little music by The Police with the lyrics "I'll always be king of pain...," followed by the staggering economic numbers that are flowing from Washington to Wall Street.

Yea, I think that would work.

Lots more a bit later today - it's grading day for me - I have about 100 speeches to grade over the next few days, but I promise to find at least a few hours later on today to comment and post about so much that has been going on in the last few weeks. I've got video, pictures, and loads to say, so please stop back.

The lunacy & stupidity of Glenn Beck

I try my hardest to never hate anyone - it's the way I was brought up. But, with the poisoned political atmosphere these days, especially among the moronic political talking heads on TV, I find it harder and harder to not despise the intolerant rubes on the right.

There is no better, shining example of this than CNN's Glenn Beck, the hate monger who once called Hurricane Katrina survivors "scumbags," and who also once said he "hates" 9-11 families, is the embodiment of why I'm politically active, and why we can never give up the fight against xenophobic, anti-government zealots.

I'm constantly reading blogs on both sides of the political aisle to shape and even modify my opinions, and one of my favorite blogs is Tom Tomorrow's This Modern World. A few days ago, he had a short but sweet post about Beck. I can think of little to add, so here it is...
The World According to Glenn Beck

Obama will move us to One World Government in the blink of an eye, and environmentalists are Nazis.

Glenn Beck also spends a lot of time mocking people who — in his phrasing — say "help me, government, help me, I'm scared!" — (i.e., people who believe that government programs to help the needy are actually a good thing.)

That's when he’s not saying, in all seriousness, "Please build a fence along the Mexican border, government, I'm scared!"
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a one reason why I read the This Modern World blog every day, and why Tomorrow's comic strip is my favorite, ever.

Oh yea - and Beck is the #1 reason (but there are many others) why I've refused to watch CNN for years now. Talk about being a Fox News wanna-be. Glenn Beck? The network couldn't do any better than that? I guess CNN said to itself, "We can't catch up to Fox, so we'll try to beat Rupert Murdoch at his own game." Cool - now there are two major cable news networks that I won't watch. It makes choosing where I get my news on TV pretty easy.

Great TMW 'toon

[Click for larger image]

I haven't posted one of his cartoons in a while, but Tom Tomorrow really hit the nail on the head this week. As his blog notes, did anyone really honestly believe that the GOP fools at bottom of the political barrel, a.k.a. the GOP hate mongers Ann Coulter, Bill O'Lielly, Sean Insanity and Rush Limbaugh, were all really going to sit on the sidelines and not support McCain vs. Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton? Yea, sure.

They may not love McCain, but they certainly aren't going to sit idly by as one of the aforementioned Democrats makes a spirited run for the White House. It's going to be a very ugly campaign indeed, and some of the b.s. has already begun. The latest New York Times report about McCain having an inappropriate relationship with a lobbyist just gives the far-right blowhards an excuse to half-heartedly get behind Judas John's candidacy.

Latest This Modern World

The latest TMW comic strip is pretty sage commentary by Tom Tomorrow - this week, he directed his well-placed ire at Alan Greenspan, the former chairman of the Federal Reserve. Greenspan's book came out this week, and it promises to be a fascinating one. Early reports have him praising President Clinton and being dour on President Dubya, but I still disagree with some of his policies over the years. It should make for an interesting read, though.

Latest This Modern World

[Click for larger image]

Here's done better, but he's spot on about Zell Lieberman, though. It's now plain to see, and was pretty easy to predict after Lieberman's victory last November - he's dedicated his term in the Senate to making the Democrats pay for having opposed him in last spring's Democratic Primary against Ned Lamont.

I'm very much looking forward to next year, when hopefully the Democrats can gain a wider margin in the Senate, thereby rendering Lieberman toothless. But, the way things are going, that's an uphill climb, too; Harry Reid couldn't lead a Boy Scout Troop. He's the biggest disgrace of a Senate Majority Leader in my lifetime.

Latest This Modern World

I really am going to quit typing this, I promise, but Tom Tomorrow is the best liberal political cartoonist in America. Okay, along with Gary Trudeau of Doonesbury fame, but you get my point.

Latest This Modern World

[Click for larger image]

Tom Tomorrow gets it right, again.

For a guy who served who served as commissioner of the Nevada state gaming commission from 1977 to 1981, Sen. Harry Reid is proving to be pretty spineless. As state gaming commish, he received numerous death threats, and his wife once found a bomb attached to one of their cars (he was commish during the dying days of the Mafia in Las Vegas).

Having that job no doubt took a great deal of intestinal fortitude. I sure wish he'd find some now.

Latest This Modern World

[Click on image for larger view]

At this point, it's beginning to sound cliché, but here's another great one by Tom Tomorrow. Our method of torture has decreased and damaged our standing around the world. And former CIA Head George Tenet's non-denial denial last week on 60 Minutes did nothing to mollify critics.

Latest "This Modern World"

Pretty thought-provoking. I don't happen to be an atheist, but I know they are vilified and shunned in many ways in our society, specifically by the radical religious right. This latest TMW wonders what an atheist thinks of Pat Tillman's death.

A great comic strip for political aficionados: This Modern World

I've read a few This Modern World comic strips in the past, and I remembered them as pretty good, but I ran across Tom Tomorrow's blog today (he pens the comic strip), and it's biting, and right on the money. I love it ~ his strip is much like Doonesbury - it'll give you a laugh, but it's got a strong point of view, too.

Anything that can make a strong political statement while simultaneously making you laugh is worthy of praise and recognition.

Here's a sample of his recent, ahem, bombs about the war and this administration. (Oldest first, the bottom two are so spot on, it's scary.

Not a bad primer. Keep reading...

Tomorrow says a whole lot in six windows, doesn't he?

Some say that sarcasm is the lowest form of humor, but I have to disagree - Tomorrow has never made sarcasm so lovable. The above strip is perhaps his best example of slamming this administration's wiener in the door.

This Modern World is has vaulted to the top of my must visit Websites every week. The new strip gets posted every Monday on Salon's Website (but you must be a subscriber) or on Tuesday at the Archive Page. For older strips dating back to 1991, go Here.

Okay, one more - this one is from just prior to the 2004 election. Seems as apropos as ever, doesn't it?
